Don't risk it all on the wrong brand. Leave with a franchisee mindset that works on any brand.
Hosted by Jason Smylie, President and owner of Capriotti's. Five mistakes first-time buyers make before the dream has a chance. Experienced franchisees welcome too. Clarity at lunch, not a pitch.
You leave with a filter you can use on any franchise, how to avoid betting on the wrong brand, and the mindset to succeed as a franchisee. Then the five mistakes that kill that outcome before it starts.
We name the trap and what it costs, so you do not learn it after you sign.
You fall in love with a logo. Then you find out the brand's values and how they run the business do not match how you live and lead. That gap turns into frustration, fights with the system, and a store that never feels right.
Big sales on a brochure are not your paycheck. Rent, labor, royalties, ads, and debt come out first. If you do not understand the real cash before you sign, you can run out of money even when the store looks busy.
A busy street is not the same as a good site. Weak access, wrong lunch traffic, or rent the sales cannot support will slow you for years. Marketing cannot fully fix a bad location.
National ads do not replace local work. If you do not market your own store after you open, the grand-opening buzz fades and competitors take the lunch crowd.
Year one is a job with equity, not a mailbox check. If you are not present as an owner, standards slip, cash burns, and home gets the leftover version of you.
A clearer filter for any franchise you look at, and how Capriotti's tries to take the hard parts seriously. If Caps might be a fit, talk with franchise development.

I was a franchisee before I was a franchisor. I have been on both sides of the fence. I have seen franchisees win and lose, and I have made some of these mistakes myself.
I am President and principal owner of Capriotti's. Ten years in that seat, 22 years in franchising, and I still live the operator side of this brand every week.
This hour is education. What to look for when you choose a franchise, and how Capriotti's tries to do the hard parts differently. I am not here to talk you into a logo.
